As I write this, I’m about to open the world premiere of Experts in a Dying Field at Cleveland Public Theatre! I’ve had such a lovely time working on this cool and adventurous new script with a team of wonderful, thoughtful, kind, and hilarious artists. From playwright Jonathon Morgan: “Experts in a Dying Field is a play about being fungi, and being fun guys. It’s interactive, a little weird, and ends with a sing-along of Queen’s 1978 classic, ‘Fat Bottomed Girls.’ This will be a productive use of your time.” We run this weekend only, February 13-15 at 7pm. After that I’m headed across the street to Near West Theatre to play Barry Mann in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical! I’m really excited for this one, not only because I love Carole King but because the team is incredible. Molly Andrews-Hinders is playing Carol, and she and I will both get to play music live on stage. The ensemble is full of some of Cleveland’s finest, and the creative team is just as stacked. I’m also working on Future Perfect, a band / musical co-written with my friend David L. Munnell. It’s sort of a cross between a concept album and a theatre piece, using the life of Yuri Gagarin as a jumping-off point to explore a story about lost love and moving past heartbreak. We’re playing with an eclectic mix of rock styles, drawing inspiration from Bowie, Queen, Spiritualized, Radiohead, Hedwig, and many more.
